mr4 cold laser therapyMR4 Cold laser therapy for soft tissue injuries is an effective part of our program at Art of Chiropractic. Dr. Leipold specializes in effective, drug-free treatment of acute and chronic pain from hard-to-diagnose soft tissue injuries. The Multi Radiance MR4 LaserStim is part of his integrated treatment program.

Cold laser therapy (also called low level  laser therapy – LLLT) uses low levels of light that stimulate the healing process. Unlike surgical lasers, LLLT does not produce heat, using light alone to facilitate healing.

The MR4 probe is the only device of its kind that combines both the power of LLLT and electrical stimulation to stimulate the healing of soft tissue injuries. That’s not all; the MR4’s patented TARGET technology helps locate damaged tissue using skin conductance. TARGET stands for Treatment Area Recognition and Guidance Enhanced Technology. During treatment, the MR4 LaserStim constantly measures the patient’s tissue density and alerts the operator to problem areas by changing the light on the emitter head from green to red. No other cold laser includes this kind of diagnostic power.

Soft tissue injuries can be hard to diagnose and treat. MRI and X-rays rarely show evidence of injury. The injury may be subtle, comparatively minor damage spread over a large volume of muscle, ligaments, or tendons.

Consider Chiropractic Treatment if you've Experienced Whiplast

One example of difficult, chronic pain is whiplash injury, which we’ve covered in earlier posts. The source may be easy to pin down – a car accident, for example – but the location and extent of the injuries may be elusive. That’s where the TARGET mode of the MR4 becomes invaluable, guiding the laser emitter directly to damaged soft tissue.

Without hard evidence of injury, conventional medicine often lacks a treatment model for “elusive” chronic pain. Patients are dismissed without relief, and in some cases they are referred to psychiatrists for “psycho-somatic” aliments. Some are made to question the reality of their injuries, even though they suffer constant pain. Others are given pain-relieving medicines or even psychiatric drugs with detrimental side effects. If you fall into any of these categories, or if you suffer from acute or chronic pain, it’s time to come in for an examination and consultation with Dr. Leipold.

How does MR4 cold laser therapy work?

The MR4 supplies energy to the body as photons of light. Tissues and cells absorb this energy, accelerating the rate of tissue healing. The effects are photochemical, not unlike photosynthesis in plants. The cold laser can affect cell membrane permeability, aids in the production of ATP (food for cells) and increases cellular energy, thus enhancing natural healing processes.

Unlike anti-inflammatory drugs, MR4 cold laser therapy is safe, non-invasive, and has no known detrimental side effects. Let’s take a look at what it can do for injuries and chronic pain.

  • Anti-inflammatory: Laser light reduces swelling, eases pain, lessens stiffness, and improves joint and muscle function.
  • Rapid cell repair: Increased ATP accelerates cellular reproduction and healing.
  • Faster wound healing: Cold laser stimulates fibroblast development and accelerates collagen synthesis in damaged tissue.
  • Reduced fibrous tissue formation: Helps to minimize formation of scar tissue, aiding in more complete healing, with less chance of weakness and re-injury.
  • Increased vascular activity: Increased blood flow to injured areas accelerates healing.
  • Nerve function stimulation: Speeds nerve cell processes, which may decrease pain and numbness associated with nerve-related conditions.

Here are some conditions that can benefit from MR4 cold laser therapy:

  • Acute soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains
  • Back and neck pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Chronic pain syndromes such as frozen shoulder and chronic low back pain
  • Fractures
  • Nerve pain from disc injuries
  • Sports-related injuries
  • Ulcers and diabetic ulcers
  • Post-operative care: pain, tendon repair, post mastectomy lymphoedema, infected wounds, and burns

If you live in Asheville or the surrounding areas and suffer from the chronic pain of soft-tissue injuries, it’s time to make an appointment to see Dr. Leipold at Art of Chiropractic. MR4 cold laser therapy, along with chiropractic adjustments, electro-stimulation, and other modalities are just what the doctor ordered to begin relief from chronic pain.
